Many adults need dentures at some point in their lives, particularily as they begin to age more. This is only natural.
Even if you’ve taken exceptionally good care of your teeth, the years of wear and tear often make dentures necessary. Here are 5 warning signs that you may need dentures.
Trouble Eating and Chewing
Pain when eating and chewing is a big indicator that you might need dentures. Difficulty eating chewy or hard foods can be a sign of cavities, a cracked tooth, or even gum disease. It’s important to talk to your dentist if you’re experiencing trouble chewing your food, and they can help you treat and preserve your original teeth. They will likely recommend a root canal and place a crown on the tooth to slow decay. Sometimes, if the damage is irreparable, your dentist will recommend dentures.
A painful, persistent toothache that won’t go away is a red flag when it comes to denture warning signs. Tooth decay that penetrates to the nerve can often cause this type of toothache. A root canal might be able to save your tooth, but if the decay is excessive then a dental implant or partial denture may be necessary.
Inflammation or excessive bleeding in the gums should be treated by a dentist right away. When it’s not treated, it can often lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease. A staggering number of adults in the United States experience some form of periodontal disease. The Center for Disease and Control reports that as many as 47% of adults over age 30 and 70% of adults over the age of 65 deal with the disease. Periodontal disease causes bone loss around your teeth and will ultimately lead to total tooth loss and a need for dentures.
Loose teeth as an adult are a big indicator that bone loss around your teeth has begun. If you feel your teeth shifting or loosening, you should see your dentist right away to determine if there’s any hope of saving the tooth. If saving it is impossible, it will be extracted and need to be replaced with implants or dentures.
Losing teeth is fun as a child, but much less so for adults. A tooth that falls out in adulthood warrants immediate action. One tooth falling out might not seem like a big deal, but you can bet that more teeth are soon to follow. Missing teeth places extra pressure on the remaining teeth, and that increases the chance of losing more teeth. Tooth loss is a good indicator that you might need dentures.
